Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
