The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story
Throughout this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
