Previous FBI chief James the former director has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.

The former director's lawyer submitted the answer on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would try to have the legal matter terminated for various factors including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the judge they intended to present several legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a court case, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was first handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

The former director seemed in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the judge.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the moment, the director was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. The charges against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump shared on online platforms calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and other people.
