Doris Makes Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn matches, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out because of injury, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-man group, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".
Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's three league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
