A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in positions just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
